Famous People from the Cambridgeshire |
Hobson, Thomas (c. 1544-1631)Carrier and inn-keeper of Cambridge. For some 50 years he drove a stagecoach the 60 miles from Cambridge to London at breakneck speed. He kept a stable of horses to rent out to students at the university, and required each customer to take the horse nearest the stable door, whatever its quality; hence the expression "Hobson's choice', meaning no choice at all. |
