(1904-1988)
Archbishop
of Canterbury (1961-74), born in Cambridge.
He studied theology at Cambridge, was ordained in 1928, and became professor
at Durham (1940-50) and Cambridge (1950-2). He was Bishop of Durham (1952-6)
and Archbishop of York (1956-61). As Archbishop of Canterbury he worked
for Church unity, making a historic visit to Pope Paul VI in the Vatican
in 1966, but was disappointed in his attempts to forge a reconciliation
with the Methodist Church. His books include The Resurrection of Christ
(1945) and Be Still and Know (1982). He retired in 1974, and was given
a life peerage.
