Social scientist, born in Cambridge. She studied at Cambridge, where she became a lecturer in economics, moving to be director of studies (1927--44) and professor of social studies (1948--52) at London. A frequent royal commissioner and London magistrate, she is best known for her Testament for Social Science (1950), in which she attempted to assimilate the social to the natural sciences. She was created a life peer in 1958.
