Mandeville, Geoffrey de, 1st Earl of Essex. English baron. A cruel man, he succeeded his father as constable of the Tower c.1130, and proved a traitor alternately to King Stephen and Empress Matilda. He took finally to plundering in the Cambridgeshire fens, was besieged by Stephen, and killed.
